Word Colony series published by Pegasus Spiele

Friedberg, May 07, 2025: The family game Word Colony, its expansion Word Colony: Around the World as well as the children’s game version Word Colony Kids – My First Words, designed by Dorian Särmäsan and published by Pegasus Spiele are a clever blend of answering trivia questions and building words with letter cards.

In Word Colony, two to four players ages 10 and up try to collect as many letter cards as possible to form not only words but whole word colonies in front of them. To gain letter cards, they have to guess the correct answer to trivia questions. Each question appears on a letter card that also displays its value when scored. On a player’s turn, they choose a letter card from their hand and read both its question, as well as the four possible answers out loud. Then, the other players secretly vote. Players that guess correctly are rewarded with bonus letter cards — if no one guessed it right, the active player takes the reward. To score victory points, the active. player can now use their letter cards to form words and can link them together to form word colonies. The bigger the word colony, the more victory points scored. But players must be cautious—if they leave a single word stranded, another player can steal its points by building upon it. The player with the most victory points wins!

The Word Colony base game contains over 440 trivia questions. Even more fun and variety arrives in Word Colony: Around the World, the adventurous expansion for Word Colony. Word Colony: Around the World takes players to faraway places and famous landmarks and contains 90 letter cards with new trivia questions matching its adventurous topic. On top of that, six additional booster cards provide even more action and variety. The new cards can either be mixed into the basic game or used on their own with the Word Colony base game components.

For younger players, Pegasus Spiele introduced Word Colony Kids – My First Words for players ages five and up. In Word Colony Kids – My First Words, the concept of Word Colony remains the same, but it adds a fun twist combining education with game play. Up to four children can practice their reading and spelling skills as well as identifying the meaning of a word. In each round the children try to build words letter by letter, using colourful letter cards. The letter cards also feature picture snippets, to help the kids arranging the letters in the correct order to form a complete word. Once the word is assembled, they ring the charming bell and proudly read it aloud. If the word is spelled correctly, they earn a star card that matches the word they created.

The letter cards in Word Colony Kids – My First Words come in three difficulty levels, indicated by the number of stars on them. The game also includes additional question cards for more advanced game play or older children. It can be played in four different game modes, depending on the child’s mood and progress.
